On the first weekend in September this year I made a journey I have been wanting to do for many years. I visited the site of Adobe Walls. For those unfamiliar with the name, two major battles occurred there, one in 1864 and another in 1874.
In addition, three skirmishes between Indians and hide hunters operating in the field for the Bent brothers (of Bent’s Fort in Colorado) occurred in the 1840s. In fact, back in 1976 I wrote a scholarly article for the Great Plains Journal called The Battles of Adobe Walls, yet I never had visited the actual location. It was on private land, and one had to have permission.
