More junior high track records tumble at champions meet

The Azle Junior High girls track teams remain astonishing.

Led by Keith Boenisch, both the eighth and seventh grade squads won district titles at the Meet of Champions at Saginaw Chisholm Trail High School; it was win No. 6 for the eighth grade.

And, along the way, more school records were set. All were especially memorable.

Distance runner Julian Hernandez won the 1600 with a record-setting time of 5 minutes, 0.51 seconds, besting the previous mark held by Matt Cartwright (5:00.87) set in 1996.

Hernandez dedicated the win to his late father. “He had a focus and desire to win for his dad that has been awesome,” Boenisch said. Hernandez, an eighth grader, also won the 2400 race.

Seventh grader Logan Graham broke the Azle JH 400 record – for about five minutes.

After Graham sped the lap at 1:03.59 – breaking AHS’ eighth grader Natalie Smith’s record by 0.2 – Smith hit the oval and lowered Graham’s mark by .08.

“It was crazy fun to watch,” Boenisch said.

Madison Rust set a new 2400 mark at 9:25.33. Runner-up Katie Davis also beat the previous record of 9:37 that Kaylee Johnson had set earlier this year. “These are the fasted seventh graders I’ve ever seen,” said the coach.
