Water restrictions begin June 3

City of Azle to follow suit

The Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) will implement Stage 1 of its Drought Contingency Plan on June 3.
Because the city of Azle has adopted an identical plan to TRWD’s, director of public services Rick White said Azle, too, will begin Stage I restrictions on June 3.
With the district’s overall system capacity hovering at 75 percent and the persistence of drought conditions in North Texas, the decision will allow the district and its wholesale customers to conserve water until conditions improve.
TRWD’s customers – including the cities of Azle, Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield and the Trinity River Authority – will implement a maximum two-day-a-week watering schedule and other water-saving measures.
The primary focus of TRWD’s Stage 1 actions is to significantly reduce outdoor watering, which can account for as much as 50 percent or more of the daily residential water used during the summer.
Residential customers whose addresses end in odd numbers (1,3,5,7, or 9) will be permitted to only water lawns and landscapes with sprinklers on Sundays and Thursdays.
Addresses ending in even numbers (2,4,6,8 or 0) may only water on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
Non-residential customers, including apartments, businesses, parks and common areas, may only water on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Watering by hand, soaker hoses and drip irrigation is allowed at any time on any day of the week. The time of day restriction, which prohibits watering between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., will continue to remain in effect.
Other Stage 1 measures include reducing the frequency of draining and filling swimming pools, discouraging the public from hosing paved areas, and encouraging hotels and restaurants to only serve water upon request.
Other wasteful acts such as neglecting leaky faucets and broken sprinklers, and allowing excessive water run-off are prohibited.
This is the second time TRWD, which serves 1.8 million people in 11 North Texas counties, has implemented watering restrictions based on storage capacity.
The district last implemented restrictions in August 2011. TRWD’s Water Conservation and Drought Contingency Plan can be viewed at www.savetarrantwater.com.
