Hornets end up third in district

Azle vs Birdville in bi-district

A rival’s shocking base running blunder at a crucial time helped Azle (20-9-1, 9-5) to a playoff berth.
At Lake Dallas on April 26 in the 5-4A finale, the Hornets led the Falcons 3-2 in the hosts’ final at bat.
Lake Dallas’ first two runners got on base, second and third. Things looked bleak.
Coach Anthony Barron said, “At this point, I thought to myself we need a miracle.”
And AHS got one.
With the infield in, Colton Carpenter coaxed a grounder to short from the Falcon hitter. Hornet Trenton Walcott froze the third base runner then threw out the batter at first.… Read the rest

Playoff scramble comes down to final contest

No matter what happens in the season finale, the Hornet baseball team will play at least one more game after the regular season ends.
Azle (18-8-1, 8-5) beat Denton and lost to Byron Nelson, setting up a 2013-concluding race to the finish line.
While Wichita Falls Rider is in, four other teams are vying for the final three playoff berths.
Coach Anthony Barron said, ‘If Guyer, Azle, and Nelson all win Friday, we have to all play Saturday to determine seeds.
“If we lose Friday, then we have to play Lake Dallas again on Saturday to see who gets fourth place.”

Time for ball!

After a series of scrimmages, the 2013 Hornet baseball team is ready to get things in gear.
Azle will host Birdville, Mansfield Summit, South Grand Prairie, Northwest, Crowley, and Midland Christian in a rotational tournament, the Jerry Durant Classic Feb. 21-23.
AHS coach Anthony Barron said all three Hornet squads are “coming on great.”
Headded, “Some players have really stepped up this year. We should get a lot of help from our seniors.”
Barron said Azle shone against visiting Joshua Feb. 16.
Returning players include Will Bagby, Slayton Vaughan, Colton Carpenter, and Chase McBay.
