Ray and Shirley Garner celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Aug. 31 at the Azle VFW with a dinner and dance hosted by their children and spouses.

The Garners were married in 1953 in Wichita, Kansas by Reverend Irving Conradson.

They made their first home in Wichita – a furnished apartment that cost about $15 a week.

When Ray was drafted by Uncle Sam, he and Shirley were stationed in Alabama. Ray spent 15 months with occupational forces in Germany as a helicopter mechanic.

Ray worked at Bell Helicopter, General Dynamics, and as a journeyman carpenter, retiring from General Dynamics in August 1995.

The couple also owns a real estate business.

The Garners raised four children: Gary, Kathy, Jere, and Steve and all four graduated from Azle ISD. The family now includes 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
