Azle’s Slayton Vaughan competed in the annual All-Star basketball game in Mineral Wells and almost put $1,000 in his pocket.
During the game, the 5-4A First Team All-District Hornet hit a three-pointer and a couple of field goals while grabbing a few boards.
But it was at the halftime three-point shooting contest that Vaughan especially shone.
The AHS senior was one of three long range shooters to reach the latter round where a $1,000 scholarship prize awaited the winner.
In round two, Vaughan went 2-for-3 with his other shot just popping out; had it been good, he would have been the winner.
In round three, the Hornet went 1-for-3 and a competitor 2-for-3 to edge Vaughan for the scholarship.
