The Azle Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary gave out a quartet of awards recently.
Azle High School instructor Bill Wyser was named the Teacher of the Year.
Wyser, a 10-year veteran of AHS where he teaches math, started the first ROTC program at Azle High in October 2011 – the Civil Air Patrol Cadet squadron – with help from the Azle VFW, the Azle American Legion, the Azle Lions Club, and the Azle Optimist Club.
The first commanding officer of the squadron, Wyser, who will retire at the end of this school year, made it possible for cadets to fly in aircraft and even take the controls.
Capriella Hedgpeth won the Voice of Democracy honor.
Lauren Coker of Forte Junior High was the Patriot’s Pen winner.
Tayler Bailey of Keller took the patriotic art award.
