An Azle man died Tuesday evening at Possum Kingdom Lake in what authorities are describing as an apparent accidental drowning, the Mineral Wells Index reported.
Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Shawn Humphries said Jose Juan Garcia, 35, was at the location in the Gaines Bend subdivision on a work assignment with a number of other individuals.
At one point, Humphries said, the construction worker decided to take a swim nearby.
“He was working with friends and went swimming off a boat ramp at the place they were working,” Humphries said.
Garcia became distressed, Humphries added, explaining both his colleagues and the resident homeowner promptly came to his aid.
The homeowner, Humphries explained, quickly donned SCUBA gear and jumped in the lake to retrieve Garcia.
Efforts by those at the scene and, upon their arrival, EMS workers, were ultimately unsuccessful, Humphries said.
Humphries said Garcia’s official time of death is listed as 6:58 p.m. Tuesday.
“We requested an autopsy,” he noted. “We do that in accidental deaths so there are no questions that arise later.”
He confirmed Garcia’s body was transported to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office.
According to a Gaines Bend spokesperson, Garcia drowned inside the Hell’s Gate basin, where he estimated the depth could be as much as 100 feet or greater.
